Vision:
At Grateley Primary School, we recognise that effective, high-quality religious education in the UK is central to our pupils living a prosperous, inclusive and inspiring life as respectful adult citizens in a culturally diverse society and wider world. It is essential that young people are confident in their core knowledge of world views which not only shape our shared history and culture, but which guide their development. Our pupils champion the Grateley values of respect as well as tolerance and individual liberty, engaging with ideas of those who hold varied beliefs and world views, both religious and secular, and avoiding harmful stereotyping and ignorance.
Pupil voice, ‘R.E is like an iceberg. As you unpack ideas, you come to understand deeper meaning.’
Intent:
The R.E curriculum meets the Statutory Guidance from Year 1-6.
At Grateley Primary School, we believe that it is important for all our pupils to learn about religion, so that they can understand the world around them. The aim of Religious Education in our school is to help children to acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity and the other principal religions represented in Great Britain; to appreciate the way that religious beliefs shape life and behaviour, develop the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious and moral issues and enhance their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
It plays an important role, along with all other curriculum areas, particularly PSHRE, in promoting social awareness and understanding in our children. We encourage our pupils to ask questions about the world and to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences. We include and promote British values, ensuring that children are aware of their rights and responsibilities as UK citizens. It is important for the children to know about the local and wider community.
The important Grateley Value that is promoted through Religious Education is respect.
Implementation:
Religious Education is a statutory subject of the curriculum for all pupils in each year group and should be provided for all registered pupils except those withdrawn at the request of their parents.
Parents have the right to request that their child be excused from all or part of the Religious Education provided at school.
We comply with the legal requirements for the teaching of Religious Education by following the Hampshire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education- Living Difference.
Religious Education is taught in a block every half term in each class. Lessons are planned and delivered in a variety of ways so that all children can participate fully. Interactive, practical activities linked to the themes in the curriculum encourage our pupils to discuss their ideas and extend their understanding of difficult concepts and challenging questions.
Impact:
The children’s knowledge and understanding of, and their ability to respond to, Christianity, other principal world religions, other religious traditions and world views. They understand and respect different religions, beliefs, values and traditions (including ethical life choices), through exploring issues within and between faiths.
The children understanding of the influence of faith and belief on individuals, societies, communities and cultures; skills of enquiry and response through the use of religious vocabulary, questioning and empathy.
