French
Vision:
In a world where communication is so important, children at Grateley Primary School need to equip themselves in order to converse with people around the globe. By learning a language different from English, children understand how language works and opens doors to a wide world before them in order to become global citizens. Children will in turn, understand other cultures and how it differs from their own and therefore develop knowledge and understanding of how other people live their lives.
Czech Proverb, ‘You live a new life for every language you speak. If you only know one language, you only live once.’
Intent:
Children at Grateley Primary School learn French.
The French curriculum meets the Statutory Guidance from Year 3-6 and is also taught in Year R, 1 and 2 which is unique to Grateley Primary School.
The decision to teach French to the children has been made in part because it is taught at the majority of the feeder Secondary Schools so is supporting the pupil’s transition at the end of year 6 into the wider community. As part of the school team, we have a fluent French speaking teacher so she leads on the teaching of French across school.
Our Grateley values, especially those of enthusiasm and respect are reflected in the teaching and learning of French.
Over the academic year of 25/26, essential knowledge organiser will be developed to support the progression of French across school.
Implementation:
French is taught from Year Reception -6 weekly by a teacher who is fluent in French. We supplement this curriculum with a scheme called, ‘La Jolly Ronde’ that has a variety of resources to ensure accurate pronunciation and articulation.
Impact:
Children will have an understanding of simple French words and will develop an understanding of how language works. Children will have an emerging love of learning a different language which will put them in good stead for the next part of their educational journey.
